El Bierzo is a land of grapes and wine, a vine-covered region, full of tradition, history, culture, gastronomy and 2000 years of activity in wine production. Quotes from Pliny the Elder and Strabo refer to the existence of vineyards in the region which is known today as El Bierzo and whose name derives from the pre-Roman city of Bergidum.

The soils are composed of a mixture of fine elements, quartz and slate. They get water coming from the mountains down into the valleys. The vineyards are planted mainly on humid dark soil which is slightly acidic and low in carbonates, typical of humid climates.

Our land, recognized as a World Heritage Site and World Biosphere Reserve has a unique micro-climate, well suited to the agriculture of the area, giving our vines a special character. Being situated in a valley, the climate is mild and humid.

The local variety of grape, Mencia, is perfectly suited to both its climate and environment. The ancestral use of this grape, generation after generation, has resulted in a natural selection, making Mencia the most suitable variety for producing red wines of great character.
